API Q1

Quality Management for Petroleum and Natural Gas Manufacturing Organizations. A quality management standard for product producers, API Spec Q1 is specifically designed to take into account the idiosyncrasies of the oil and gas sector.

What is API Q1?

This specification specifies the requirements of a quality management system for an organization to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide reliable products and manufacturing-related processes that meet customer and legal requirements for use in the petroleum and natural gas industry. If an organization performs activities addressed by this specification, no claims to exclusion of those activities are permitted.

Where any requirement of this specification cannot be applied due to the nature of an organization, the requirement can be considered for exclusion. Where exclusions are made, the basis for claiming exclusions is to be identified. Furthermore, such exclusions cannot affect the organization’s ability, or responsibility, to provide products and related servicing that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements. Exclusions are limited to the following sections:

Design and Development.
Servicing.
Validation of Processes for
Production and Servicing.
Customer-supplied Property.
Control of Testing, Measuring, and Monitoring Equipment.
Some of the requirements are from ISO 9001:2015 and are included in the API Q1.

API Q1 applies to those activities that otherwise may be considered a service (such as heat treatment, threading, or testing) if these activities or the results of these activities are identified as an API monogram able product under any applicable API product specification in the API Monogram Program.

What are the core values/controls/principles of API Q1 ?

The Core value of this specification is to provide the minimum requirements for the development of a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasizes defect prevention, and strives to minimize variation and waste from manufacturing organizations. It is designed to promote reliability in the manufacturing sector of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is not the intent of this specification to imply uniformity in the structure of quality management systems or uniformity of documentation.

What is a design package for API Q1 ?

Design Package: API Monogram Certification Program requires manufactures to maintain the Design Package(s) conforming to the latest edition of the applicable API Product Specification(s). During API Monogram Certification Audits, these design packages are reviewed and audited under API Spec Q1.
The purpose of the implementation of the API Monogram Program is to ensure organization’s ability to consistently provide reliable products as per API product specifications. To meet and demonstrate this objective, organizations shall maintain a complete design package and procedures, plans and instructions on how to develop a design.
A design package is a collection of set of documentation, which includes following as a minimum but not limited to Design Plan, Design Inputs, Functional, Technical and Customer requirements, Applicable API, ASTM, ASME and other referenced standards and specifications. Methods, assumptions and formulae used Salutatory and Legal Requirements, Results from Risk assessments.
Design Output: Design Calculation, Assembly and Component drawings, Bill of Material, Material Specifications, Work Instructions, Procedures, WPS/PQR, Quality Plans
Design Review: Verification: Route Cards, Check Sheets, Inspection and Test Reports generated during In-coming, In-process and Final Inspection and Testing
Design Validation: Prototype Tests, Validation tests specified by standards and (or) regulators. Field Performance Test, Design Change Records
